CANTINA NIGHT

An homage to historic drinks, copious snacks, and being together (again)

Saturday, December 6 / Sunnyside, Queens / 5 to 8 pm / $85

It’s been a while! We had a baby!

That’s the big news, now nearly 12 pounds. The smaller news is that it’s time to finally reopen the mezcal room, for something slightly more casual and maybe more convivial than a typical tasting. It’s a chance to be together and drink (and eat!) together again, in the style of that most iconic of Mexican drinking and eating destinations: the cantina.

There will be mezcal, of course, but also beer. There will be brilliant green yerbabuena cocktails à la Guadalajara’s Saloon del Bosque. There will be garlic peanuts and fresh vegetables doused with lime and salt and some warming old-school stew like sopa de mariscos or espinazo con verdolagas (pork neck and purslane soup). Even, it goes without saying, tequila.

We’ll start with a welcome drink and a seated tasting of three heritage agave spirits. Then things will turn less educational and more experiential, as an improvised sequence of more mezcal unfurls — and the more substantial food arrives. Consider it a tasting-plus-dinner-party. We’ll start early and end early enough for you to see where the night takes you.

This new experiment at cantinero life will take place in our private space in Sunnyside, Queens. As always, you’ll try spirits you might not encounter anywhere else, and meet new people around our single communal table.
